How Technology Can Assist Palm Bay Police with Addressing the Issues in the Palm Bay Compound

Tonight is the Palm Bay City Council Workshop concerning the compound. It has taken 3 months since the bodies of two teenage males were found in the compound. This was not even the latest incident in the compound as BCSO apprehended an accused murderer while he was trying to dispose of a body in the compound.

The Palm Bay Compound is a 12-square-mile area of privately-owned land that has become a popular destination for off-roading, camping, and other outdoor activities. However, the area has also been plagued by crime, including shootings, robberies, and drug trafficking.

In an effort to address these issues, We’ve created some ideas that may help the City get resolve this long standing issue.

Autonomous Drones

Autonomous drones can be used to patrol the Palm Bay Compound and to monitor for criminal activity. The drones can be equipped with cameras and sensors that can detect movement, heat, and sound. This information can be used to identify potential suspects and to track their movements.

There are several software vendors that are specific to police use, and employ off the shelf hardware (drones) to create a fleet of 1, 10, or 100 drones. The different sensors and imaging hardware available for these systems vary depending on the size and capabilities of the drone. Some of the most common sensors and imaging hardware include:

• High-resolution cameras

• Thermal imaging cameras

• LiDAR sensors

• Radar sensors

These sensors and imaging hardware can be used to provide a variety of information, including the location of people and vehicles, the temperature of objects, and the presence of obstacles.

Shotspotter Technology

Shotspotter technology can be used to detect gunshots in the Palm Bay Compound. This information can be used to dispatch officers to the scene of a shooting and to investigate the incident.

Here is a list of different sounds that ShotSpotter can be set to detect:

• Gunshots

• Fireworks

• Car backfires

• Construction noises

• Generators

• Loud music

• Air conditioners

• Lawnmowers

• Motorcycles (ATV’s)

• Helicopters

• Police sirens

• Ambulance sirens

• Fire engines

ShotSpotter can also be set to detect the sound of multiple gunshots, such as those fired from a fully automatic weapon.

These technologies can be used to help the Palm Bay Police Department to address the issues in the Palm Bay Compound. They can help to identify suspects, track their movements, and respond to calls for service.

However, it is important to note that these technologies are not a cure-all. They cannot prevent crime from happening, but they can help to reduce crime and to make Palm Bay and the Compound a safer place.

I (Thomas Gaume) will be speaking at the meeting about these technologies. I know there will be a cost so I will also come with information about applicable grants that can be used to make such purposes for public safety.
