L3Harris to Help Put Astronauts Back on the Moon
Audio System to be Key to Success of Artemis I Mission
L3Harris Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:LHX) announced today that it has been selected by NASA to provide the audio system for the Artemis I mission, the first crewed flight to the Moon since Apollo 17. The Orion spacecraft's audio system will provide critical communications between the astronauts and Mission Control, as well as between the astronauts themselves.
The system is being designed and built at L3Harris' facility in Palm Bay, Florida. It will use a variety of technologies, including high-performance microphones, speakers, and amplifiers. The system will also be equipped with a number of features to ensure its reliability and performance in the harsh environment of space.
"For more than six decades, we have partnered with NASA to develop technology that has made significant impacts on space exploration," said Ed Zoiss, President, Space and Airborne Systems, L3Harris. "For as long as NASA has been sending humans to space, L3Harris has been pushing the limits of audio technological advancements, providing critical communication capabilities for all aspects of the space mission.”
The Artemis I mission is scheduled to launch in late 2023. It will send an uncrewed Orion spacecraft around the Moon and back to Earth. The mission will pave the way for the Artemis II mission, which will send a crewed Orion spacecraft around the Moon in 2024. The Artemis III mission, which is scheduled for 2025, will be the first landing mission.
