Excellent reporting.

I do believe our city attorney has done a disservice to the City Council and Police Chief.

There needs to be solid, logical laws pointed out so this overstepping of authority stops.

Just because a person is in authority, whether it be a Supervisor or the Council as a whole, they need to be educated on what the lawful steps must be.

Time to take a good, hard look at the advice the legal department is giving to our City staff.

I see it as government has way overstepped their authority. This is not national security. This is abuse

I have to ask why this is kept secret ? It’s not national security! It is our money! So what is the reasoning? Is this Constitutional?

Karen, it's a fair question. Settlement amounts in civil litigation are almost always sealed by agreement between both parties. The city's insurer, Florida Municipal Insurance Trust, typically requires confidentiality as a condition of payout. It's not unique to Palm Bay; it's standard practice in municipal liability cases statewide.

Is it constitutional? Yes. Settlement agreements are private contracts, not government actions subject to public records law in the same way. The case file, the claims, the dismissal order are all public record. The dollar figure is the one thing both sides agreed to keep confidential.

Whether that should be the standard is a different question, and one worth asking out loud.
