Palm Bay, FL — Palm Bay is experiencing its first heat advisory of the season, with temperatures and heat index values expected to reach up to 103 degrees Fahrenheit. The National Weather Service issued the advisory for today, with high temperatures anticipated throughout the weekend.

While heat advisories are common in Palm Bay during the summer months, this early-season advisory serves as a reminder for residents to take precautions against the dangers of excessive heat.

Here's what you need to know:

Heat Index Values: The heat index, which considers both temperature and humidity, is expected to reach up to 103 degrees Fahrenheit. This means it will feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature, posing a greater risk of heat-related illnesses.
Advisory Timing: The advisory is in effect from 10 AM to 8 PM. During these hours, residents should be especially vigilant and take extra precautions to stay cool.
Staying Safe: The Palm Bay community is advised to:
- Stay Hydrated: 💧 Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks and alcohol, as they can dehydrate you.
- Limit Outdoor Activity: 🚶‍♀️🏃‍♂️ Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. If you must be outdoors, take frequent breaks in shaded areas.
- Wear Lightweight Clothing: 👕 Opt for loose-fitting, light-colored clothing to help your body stay cool.
- Seek Cool Environments: 🏢 If you’re feeling overheated, spend time in air-conditioned spaces like libraries, shopping malls, or movie theaters.
"Kids to Parks Day": Despite the heat advisory, the city has announced that "Kids to Parks Day" is still on! While no changes to the events have been announced, it's important for families to prioritize safety and be extra mindful of the heat while participating in outdoor activities.
- Be extra cautious: 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Take frequent breaks in shaded areas, provide plenty of water for kids, and monitor for any signs of overheating.

Health Risks and First Aid:

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Heat exhaustion: Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and fainting.
Heat stroke: This more serious condition occurs when the body's temperature rises above 103 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you or someone you know is experiencing either condition, call 911 immediately. While waiting for EMS to arrive, move the victim to a cool, shaded area. Remove any unnecessary clothing and apply cool compresses to their neck, armpits, and groin. Do not give them anything to drink if they are unconscious.

Stay Informed:

For ongoing weather updates and specific guidance, residents can monitor the National Weather Service website or local news sources. Be prepared for high temperatures, and take steps to stay cool and safe!
