Palm Bay Unites to Combat the Opioid Crisis: Don’t Miss This Critical Workshop
Workshop: January 30, 2025, 6:00 PM at Palm Bay City Hall, 120 Malabar Road, SE, Palm Bay, FL
The City of Palm Bay is hosting a pivotal workshop to address the opioid crisis, a challenge that has deeply impacted both the nation and our local community. Scheduled for January 30, 2025, at 6:00 PM at Palm Bay City Hall, 120 Malabar Road, SE, this event invites residents, healthcare professionals, and local leaders to work together on strategies to combat opioid misuse. Topics of discussion will include expanding access to treatment centers, enhancing educational programs on opioid misuse, and exploring funding for naloxone distribution.
Workshop Objectives
The workshop aims to achieve the following goals:
Understand the Local Impact: Attendees will share personal experiences and examine data illustrating the effects of the opioid crisis on Palm Bay.
Allocate Settlement Funds: Discussions will focus on how to effectively use funds from national opioid settlements for prevention, treatment, and recovery programs.
Develop Collaborative Solutions: Participants will collaborate to brainstorm actionable strategies to reduce opioid misuse and support affected individuals and families.
National Context: Purdue Pharma Settlement
This workshop coincides with significant national developments. On January 23, 2025, a $7.4 billion settlement was finalized with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family to address the devastating impact of opioids like OxyContin. Funds from this historic agreement will be distributed to states, cities, and local governments, offering Palm Bay the potential to enhance its opioid prevention and recovery initiatives. These funds could support new treatment facilities, launch public awareness campaigns, and strengthen law enforcement efforts to combat illegal opioid distribution.
Palm Bay has already begun utilizing its initial $275,619.36 installment from the National Opioid Settlement received in December 2023. These resources have been allocated to programs focused on prevention, treatment, and recovery. The Purdue Pharma settlement provides additional opportunities to strengthen these initiatives and address the crisis at its root.
Community Call to Action
This workshop is a critical opportunity for Palm Bay residents to actively contribute to solving one of the community’s most pressing challenges. To prepare, residents are encouraged to review personal experiences or relevant data to share during the discussion, research potential solutions to opioid misuse, and invite others with valuable insights to join the event. Whether directly affected by the crisis or simply seeking to foster a safer, healthier city, every voice matters.
