Palm Bay, FL - The Brevard County Emergency Operations Center (BrevardEOC) has issued an advisory regarding two prescribed burns taking place today, Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The advisory was released at 10:40 AM EDT.

Details of Today's Prescribed Burns

According to the BrevardEOC advisory, the following burns are planned for today:

A 354-acre burn
A 918-acre burn

Both burns are located West of I-95 and South of US-192. Prescribed burns are typically conducted for land management and wildfire prevention.

Potential for Smoke & Afternoon Weather Changes

Smoke Drift: Given the size and location of these burns, residents in Brevard County may notice smoke. For this afternoon, winds are generally forecast to be from the east or southeast at relatively light speeds (around 3-4 mph with gusts up to 14-15 mph). This means smoke is most likely to drift generally towards the west or northwest of the burn areas. While this wind pattern might carry the densest smoke away from central Palm Bay, residents in western parts of the city, or if winds shift, could still experience noticeable smoke.

Rain Chance: Today's forecast also includes a chance of rain later this afternoon, with slight accumulations possible between 4 PM and 6 PM. Any rainfall could help to dissipate smoke and reduce the intensity of the prescribed burns.

Visibility may be affected in areas closer to the burns or where smoke is denser.

Important Considerations for Residents

Health Precautions if Smoke is Present:

Smoke from prescribed burns can affect air quality. Individuals with respiratory conditions (like asthma or COPD), heart disease, older adults, and children are particularly vulnerable. If you notice smoke in your area:

Limit Outdoor Activities: Reduce prolonged or strenuous exertion outdoors.
Stay Indoors: Keep windows and doors closed.
Use Air Conditioning: If you have an air conditioner, run it in recirculation mode to keep smoke out. Ensure your filter is clean.
Monitor Symptoms: Pay attention to any symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, or irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat. Contact your healthcare provider if symptoms worsen.

Stay Aware & Informed

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on local conditions through official channels.

Monitor updates from the Brevard County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) (e.g., their website or social media) and reliable local news sources for the latest information on these burns and smoke conditions.
If you have health concerns that may be aggravated by smoke, please consult with your healthcare provider.
For general information on smoke and health, resources like the Florida Department of Health or AirNow.gov can be helpful.

Summary

Two significant prescribed burns are occurring today, May 28th, West of I-95 and South of US-192. Smoke may drift primarily to the west/northwest. There is also a chance of rain this afternoon which may help clear the air. Palm Bay residents, particularly those in western areas or with health sensitivities, should remain aware of potential smoke and be prepared to take necessary precautions as outlined above.
