State Senator Urges Governor to Suspend Palm Bay Councilman
Florida Senator Debbie Mayfield has sent a letter to Governor Ron DeSantis urging the suspension of Palm Bay Councilman Chandler Langevin after his anti-Indian social media posts.
Palm Bay, FL – The controversy over Councilman Chandler Langevin escalated further on October 1, when State Senator Debbie Mayfield sent a formal letter to Governor Ron DeSantis calling for Langevin’s immediate suspension from office.
The Letter to the Governor
In her letter, Mayfield described Langevin’s comments about Indian Americans as “inexcusable for an elected official in our state.” She noted that he had used social media to call for deportations and claimed Indians were “destroying the South.” Mayfield emphasized that Florida’s Indian-American community is comprised of “some of Florida’s most hardworking, respectable, and entrepreneurial individuals and families.”
Mayfield wrote that Langevin’s remarks are “repulsive and could not be further from the truth.” She further pointed out that rather than retracting his statements after public outrage, Langevin doubled down, defending his rhetoric in subsequent posts and interviews.
Grounds for Suspension
The letter urges the Governor to suspend Langevin immediately on grounds of malfeasance, citing the need for Florida to reject racism in all forms. “As a state we must continue to reject racism in all aspects, and I respectfully request that you address the situation by suspending Councilman Langevin from office, effective immediately,” Mayfield wrote.
The letter also indicates that examples of Langevin’s social media posts were attached for the Governor’s review.
What Happens Next
Governor DeSantis has not yet issued a response. The Palm Bay City Council is scheduled to meet Thursday, Oct. 2, where Councilman Kenny Johnson plans to bring forward a motion for the council to formally request the Governor to suspend Langevin.
This development marks the first direct call from a state legislator for Langevin’s removal and significantly increases the political pressure on both the Governor and the Palm Bay Council.
